The shave revolution: Embracing safety razors for a better grooming experience, helping reduce single use plastic

In the world of grooming, one tool has stood the test of time and continues to gain popularity among those in the know: the safety razor. While disposable razors have dominated the market for decades, safety razors are making a resurgence, and for good reason. In this blog, we’ll explore the benefits of using a safety razor over a disposable one, from environmental concerns to the quality of your shave.
- Sustainable and Eco-Friendly
One of the most significant advantages of safety razors is their eco-friendliness. Disposable razors are typically made of plastic and have a short lifespan. In contrast, safety razors are designed to last a lifetime with proper care. The replacement blades for safety razors are also minimal and often made of recyclable materials. By switching to a safety razor, you can significantly reduce your plastic waste and contribute to a greener planet.
- Cost-Effective
Although the initial investment in a safety razor may be higher, it pays off in the long run. Disposable razors require frequent replacements, and the cost can quickly add up. Safety razors, on the other hand, are built to last, and replacement blades are affordable. Over time, you’ll save a substantial amount of money by making the switch! We looked at the Gillette fusion, currently the base pack is around £13 with replacement blades costing around £2-£3 per blade ( dependent on quantity). Safety Razor blades are around £7-£10 per 100!!
- Closer and Smoother Shave
Safety razors are known for providing a closer and smoother shave compared to disposable razors. The single, sharp blade of a safety razor allows for more precision and reduces the likelihood of irritation and ingrown hairs. With proper technique, you can achieve a barber-quality shave in the comfort of your own bathroom.
- Reduced Irritation and Ingrown Hairs
Disposable razors often come with multiple blades and lubricating strips, which can increase the risk of skin irritation and ingrown hairs. Safety razors, with their single, sharp blade, are gentler on the skin. They cut hair cleanly at the surface, reducing the chances of irritation and promoting healthier skin.
- Customizable Shaving Experience
Safety razors offer a customizable shaving experience. You can choose from a variety of blade types, from mild to aggressive, to suit your skin type and shaving preferences. This level of customization allows you to achieve the perfect shave tailored to your needs.
- Timeless Design and Durability
Safety razors boast timeless, elegant designs that exude craftsmanship. These razors are typically made from high-quality materials like stainless steel or chrome, ensuring durability and longevity. With proper care, a safety razor can be a lifelong grooming companion.
Conclusion
In a world where convenience often takes precedence, it’s essential to consider the long-term benefits of choosing a safety razor over a disposable one. From environmental sustainability to a superior shaving experience, safety razors offer a compelling case for those looking to elevate their grooming routine. So, why not embrace the safety razor revolution and enjoy a closer, smoother, cheaper shave while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future?
There are so many great great razors on the market, here are a couple of our favourites

Merkur is known for its high-quality craftsmanship, and the 34C is no exception. It’s a well-built razor with a durable, chrome-finished handle that provides a comfortable grip. The 34c is my first and favourite razor, highly recommended for beginners. It has quite a short handle If you prefer a longer handle look at the 38c or 23c. I’m not the most patient shavers (always in a hurry!) I don’t want to jinx it, but I’ve never cut myself with this razor, I’d recommend the Astra Superior Platinum blades, changing them after every 5-6 shaves.
Jungle Culture designs and creates Earth-friendly products. Including some beautiful safety razors in pastel colours. My wife has one of these and cannot recommend it highly enough, They are extremely well built and come in a variety of colours. Advertised as a unisex razor, it provides a smooth shave. It has a longer handle, with slightly a different weight balance to the Merkur 34c

Since I’m not in the habbit of buying multiple items that do the same job, I cannot comment on other brands, although friends have recommended both Edwin Jagger and Muhle razors.
